Understanding the Materials We Use

At Kalatri, material selection is at the heart of everything we create. The timber you choose shapes not only the look of your furniture, but also its durability, ageing, and long-term value.

We work primarily with Premium Solid Hardwoods, carefully selected for strength, grain beauty, and sustainability. Below is a guide to the different woods and materials you may encounter when designing your piece with us.

While Kalatri specialises in solid hardwood craftsmanship, we believe in educating our customers about commonly used engineered alternatives in the furniture industry.

  • 🌟 Premium Hardwoods

High end timbers known for beauty, durability, ageing gracefully, and luxury appeal.

    • American Walnut
    • Teak Wood
    • African Sapele
    • Oak Wood

    Why they’re premium:

Rich grain patterns, long life spans, excellent stability, and strong performance for statement furniture and bespoke projects.

  • ⭐ Classic Hardwoods

Regular woods that balance strength, aesthetics, and value.

    • Messmate
    • Ash Wood
    • Acacia Wood

These woods have a tendency to crack, warp, and fade in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. It requires regular maintenance, such as oiling, to prevent it from turning gray. The wood is very hard, which can dull cutting tools and knives, and it is susceptible to scratches, dents, and, in some cases, severe allergic reactions to its dust.

  • ⚙️ Engineered Materials (Industry Alternatives)

Common in mass production but not Kalatri’s primary craft focus.

    • MDF
    • Veneer

    What to know:

These are engineered boards rather than solid timber. They are often used in budget furniture and decorative applications but do not offer the longevity, refinishing potential, or heritage value of solid hardwood.
